Zootopia Movie Review

Zootopia is a 2016 animation film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The movie is generally produced for kids, but anyone can watch it. Zootopia is a well-choreographed and executed animation film, which has won praise from all over the world. Many movie critics like Rotten Tomatoes gave very high ratings of 98% and IMDB giving an 8.1 rating. The movie was able to gross a worldwide net of $1.02 billion under a budget of $150 million (Rotten Tomatoes 1). The movie brings the unmatched directing skills of Rich Moore, Bryon Howard and Bush Jared. Zootopia has a PG rating, making it suitable for all family viewing. Zootopia hit the markets on February 10 2016 in Belgium and March 4th in the United States. The movie runs for 108 minutes and is in the English language.

It is a fantasy movie based on the city of Zootopia where predators and prey animals live harmoniously together. The predator’s cravings for blood have been depressed and therefore, they can coexist with other mammals peacefully. Zootopia stars Ginnifer Godwin as Judy Hopps, a bunny whose dream of being a police officer takes her from her hometown, Bunnyburrow, to a large anthropomorphic city of Zootopolis (Rotten Tomatoes 1). Here she attends the Zootopolis Police Academy and graduates as the first bunny cop in a city police department dominated by large animals ranging from elephants to the buffaloes.

Judy is admitted to the city’s police department, but due to her small size she is discriminated by Captain Bogo (played by Idris Elba) who instead of giving her real crime cases, he lets her to give parking tickets to unauthorized car parking. In her hustle to prove her worth, Judy Hops finds herself in contact with Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) on the first day. Nick Wilde is a con artist and a shrewd fox (Zootopia, 1). On the second day Judy also leaves her parking role to arrest a flower bulb thief Duke Weaselton. These flower bulbs later solve the missing predator’s case since they were used to trigger relapses of the already depressed predator’s blood craving making them hostile and predatory.

Judy Hops is reprimanded by the captain for failure to follow orders. An opportunity presents itself at that moment when Mrs. Otterton arrives at the captain’s office to plead for his missing husband (Zootopia, 1). Judy takes up the case, although, under claims of insubordination from the captain. The story winds up with excellent detective work between Judy and Nick, who traverses the City to find the missing predators (Rotten Tomatoes 1). Ultimately the animals responsible for the attack are arrested and the city’s peace is restored. Zootopia unravels the themes of societal prejudice, racism and discrimination through its choice of characters. Some characters like Judy and Nick are discriminated based on their demographic backgrounds, size and heritage.

Zootopia brings into play, the acting talents of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Alba and Jenny Slate. Nate Torrance, Tommy Chong, Bonnie Hunt and Shakira also work their magic in this epic adventure and detective thriller. Walt Disney yet again proved their prowess in animated movies through excellent choice of computer generated3D characters and costumes (Rotten Tomatoes 1). The cinematography adds to the high definition and clear motion film compounded with well-rehearsed background music and soundtracks by Michael Giacchino. The movie has won various awards, including a teen choice award 2016. This is a must watch movie for the children and animation lovers.
