Chapter 4 & 5: Gender in Cross-Cultural Perspective
In the reading, the authors incorporate ideologies about gender around the world and literature on gender roles to present a valuable text for the topic. The reading forms a valuable contribution of knowledge to the understanding of the impact of culture on women and gender from a global perspective. The central tenet of this book is to explore the concepts of equality and Inequality through the basis of Gender Stratification and sexual division of labor. The book presents a comprehensive look at the cases in Niger and Nicaragua to present the cultural differences that shape the understanding of gender in different social setups (Bretell & Sargent, 2013).
Another central tenet of the readings is to discuss the Cultural construction of gender by presenting relevant cases. In the reading, the reading explores gender differences from two main aspects; the ethnographic view and theoretical view. Through the use of ethnographically based literature and essays from Spain, China and New Guinea, the reading gives different cultural perspectives on gender and the role of culture on women (Bretell & Sargent, 2013). The theoretical view looks at the academic knowledge about gender that gives a descriptive aspect of gender and gender differences. In addition, theoretical view of the book focuses on the influence of culture on the way the society perceives women and the gender topic.
I found the reading not only educative but insightful, as it gives a diverse view of the cultural influence on the gender differences. From a scholarly perspective, this book gives a fair view of the cultural factors that influenced my view of gender differences. The reading presents the experiences of women in different cultural contexts in order to describe how they are impacted by the cultural perspectives. From the readings, culture is seen as the most significant factor that has contributed to different experiences of women globally.
