The Boat
The Boat summary plot introduces an interesting and tragic story not far from the Coast of Florida where four men are in a dinghy in the open sea and the surf. The author demonstrates how their ship which they were using to sail sank overnight and the four men are the only survivors of that tragic event. Therefore, without the boat, they are forced to ride in the waves; a frantic move that they adopt to survive that fails miserably as they end up drowning. This is because the sea in which they were sailing through was too rough and it forced them to the winter waters.
The author of this story demonstrates each survivor relentless effort of surviving this tragic event despite the fact that they had spent almost two days without any sleep whatsoever. However, as every man tries to survive on his own the author demonstrates them as faithful and loyal men who continue to take instruction from their captain who is obviously injured. Every member is depicted to be dumfounded and confused during the vent as they couldn’t comprehend the event that had just taken over the ship.
The major theme that is brought into light by the author concerns nature on its deistic as well as humanistic character. It is very clear that the author wanted to bring into light the indifference nature of natural phenomenon to that of human being’s plight. The boat story depicts nature as a natural phenomenon that has no iota of consciousness, which any man eventually understand.
As depicted in the story, the men struggle against the nature’s wrath relentlessly as its unforgiving reality sinks. The author has illustrated irony in the story at the beginning where the men’s perception towards nature are seen changing while the sea remains clear and still. However, that takes an opposite turn towards the end of the story where the men are met with the unpredictable changes that occur in the sea.
